Some styles of wakeboard boats are direct-drive motorboats that have engines positioned towards the middle of the boat. One essential aspect of all wake surf and wakeboard boats is cruise control, which helps the operator to maintain a constant speed that keeps the wake consistent so the rider doesn’t fall over and is able to land their jumps.

If you find your boat lacking in a particular feature, you can generally install it aftermarket. The three primary features of wake boats include ballast, hull technology and hydrofoil.

 

Ballast, meaning weight, as mentioned above, is anything that weighs down the rear of the boat to increase the size of generated wakes. Wakeboard ballast comes in a few different forms, from hard tanks filled with water to soft sandbags. Even positioning your passengers strategically can be a form of ballast!

 

Hull technology is what wake boat manufacturers use to increase the size of wakes. The shapes of the hull, the rudder propeller and the fins all add to the wake generation process. These particular features, especially the fins underneath the boat, make wake boats unsuitable for shallow water conditions, so they require sufficiently deep water for proper operation.

 

Hydrofoil devices assist in shaping the wakes. They’re generally wedges or plates that can be moved around by the boat operator in order to shift the size and shape of the wake by displacing water.
